What does the MRCP Part 2 exam assess?

The MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written Examination builds on the knowledge tested in Part 1. It assesses how well candidates can apply clinical understanding in real patient scenarios. The exam focuses on diagnosis, investigation, treatment planning, and long-term patient management. Questions are case-based and designed to reflect everyday clinical practice.

Where can I take the MRCP Part 2 exam?

The MRCP Part 2 exam is held in the UK and at a wide network of approved international centres. Many candidates also have the option of sitting the exam online via remote proctoring, allowing them to take it securely from their home country.

What are the eligibility requirements for MRCP Part 2?

To register for the MRCP Part 2 exam, you must first pass the MRCP Part 1. The written assessment consists of two papers, each three hours long, with multiple-choice questions in a best-of-five format. The exam is designed to test clinical judgment, problem-solving, and the practical application of medical knowledge across different specialities.

Will the pass mark change?

The pass mark will remain at 540 for the Part 1 exam and 454 for the Part 2 exam. Part 2 written examinations results are calculated using a process called equating. Equating is a statistical procedure used to adjust scores to account for the varying level of difficulty of test forms or diets. MRCP(UK) uses equating to ensure that candidates receive comparable results for comparable performance in different diets of the examination. Any change in difficulty will be accounted for within the equating process.

The specialty certificate examinations have 100 questions of a similar level of complexity per 3 hour paper.
